Yatra planner

Plan the whole yatra

Choose where you are setting out from, any town in India, and the planner orders all twelve shrines into the shortest sensible circuit, leg by leg, with the distance and a realistic duration. Going by train or by car? Each has a calculator of its own below.

Working out the cost, by the way you travel

The map above orders the twelve. These two work out what that order costs in days and rupees — one for the rail circuit, one for driving it.

The circuit, leg by leg

Clockwise from Somnath. Almost every operator follows this order, because it keeps the two long crossings — the run south to Rameswaram, and the haul north to Varanasi — to one each instead of three.

Twelve shrines · 7,824 km · about 23 days

The longest single leg is Ramanathaswamy to Kashi Vishwanath, 2,280 km. Plan a train or a flight for that one.

ⓘThe twelfth is Kedarnath, in the Himalaya. From there most people fly home out of Dehradun or Delhi rather than closing the loop by road. Distances are straight-line, scaled by 1.25 to approximate road travel; the duration assumes about 450 km a day plus half a day at each shrine. Planning figures, not a route sheet.

How many days it really takes

The floor is set by Kedarnath and by the two long crossings — the south, and the run up to Varanasi. Anything shorter than a fortnight is a shorter yatra, not a faster one.

LengthHow it is doneWho it suits
15 daysSix or seven flights, helicopter at KedarnathThe real minimum, with no slack for weather
18–21 daysFlights for the long hops, road in betweenWhere almost every serious operator lands
24 daysBy train, the whole circuitCheaper in rupees, dearer in time
25–30 daysUnhurried, a night at most shrinesIf you want to be at these places, not tick them

The month decides more than the route

Kedarnath opens on 22 April 2026 and shuts around ≈ 11 November 2026 (Bhai Dooj) for the season. For roughly six months of the year the twelve-shrine yatra is an eleven-shrine yatra, and the months when Kedarnath is easiest are the months the Sahyadri and the south are wettest.

The clearest window for all twelve: mid-September to early November.

Shravan (July–August) fills every one of the twelve — Mahakaleshwar and Kashi Vishwanath especially. Beautiful, and not a first visit.

What it costs

Per person, for the full twelve, self-planned over about three weeks. Quotes from operators run from ₹10,500 for two shrines to ₹1,48,450 for fifteen days with six flights, which is why the range below is worth reading before you ask anyone for a price.

TierAboutWhat it buys
Budget₹40,000Sleeper class, dharamshalas and modest hotels, buses for the last mile
Standard₹72,5003AC and some flights, ₹1,500–2,500 hotels, taxis where buses are slow
Premium₹1,27,500Flights for the long hops, 2AC otherwise, better hotels, the Kedarnath helicopter

Questions about the route

What is the best order to visit the 12 Jyotirlingas?
Clockwise from Gujarat: Somnath and Nageshwar, then Ujjain and Omkareshwar, the three in Maharashtra, then south to Srisailam and Rameswaram, north to Varanasi and Deoghar, and Kedarnath last. That order crosses the country twice instead of six times. The Shiva Purana lists the twelve in a different order, and nobody travels in it.
How long is the full circuit?
About 7,824 km by road for the twelve, which is roughly 23 days once you allow half a day at each shrine. Most people take 18 to 21 days, because flights replace the two longest legs.
Can the whole route be driven?
Almost. Kedarnath ends with 16 km on foot from Gaurikund whatever you drive, and it is shut for roughly six months of the year. Everything else has a road to the gate or close to it.
Should I start from Somnath?
Only if you live in Gujarat. Start from the shrine nearest you and follow the same loop from there — the planner on this page works that out for any town in India.
